Atlas Shrugged

I'm reposting part of a post from another forum I'm involved with. The guy who posted knows the producer of the movie, and he's urging people to go see it. Once some of us do, we can post reviews in "The Drive In" forum below. It sure looks interesting.

In my opinion, the books The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are classic American literature in a class all their own. Ayn's careful development of the objectivist viewpoint through her novels is something so special that we cannot leave to only the scholarly/educated, everyone in our country would do well to understand just why socialism is an enemy of freedom and liberty. In short; we need more people to understand this book.

With the Obamination in the oval office, massive national debt, and the democrats' push to increase entitlements and make things worse- I can think of no better time to educate the masses as to the horrors of this way of thinking, all the while exposing them to the joys of the free market system.

As you may know, there is a film version of Atlas Shrugged that will hit select theaters this Friday. This movie is the first third of the book, but it isn't merely reading the text- it's actually set a few years in the not-so distant future.

I have to admit that John Aglialoro, the person who has for many years owned the rights to Atlas Shrugged, is a family friend of mine. John struggled with Hollywood trying to get the film made by one of the big production companies, but let's face it, an anti-socialist, anti-communist movie isn't exactly what the Hollywood elite like to make. For that reason, he took a cue from George Lucas and decided to self finance the movie and do it himself.

As you can imagine, there are a lot of people who want Atlas Shrugged to fail. Hard core liberals are never going to like this film any more than hard core conservatives would like the next Michael Moore flick. As a result, there have been some reviews of this movie that basically state that if you are a liberal, you aren't going to like the movie and if you are conservative, you probably are. That's no surprise though- how many hippies do you know who would read Atlas Shrugged anyway?

Because John is not backed by Hollywood, this Friday's release is only at select theaters. I urge you in the strongest way possible to see this movie on opening night. If the turnout is good on opening night it will make it far easier to hit a broader range of theaters in the coming months. Atlas Shrugged is a masterpiece that deserves a broader audience and it is EXACTLY what we need this year to keep the tea party ideals front and center in national discourse.

I look forward to seeing it. I think I heard it will be more than one moive. We'll see how the liberal press down-plays and/or ignores it.

The book is 1,200 pages long and is written in three parts. They will release part 2 as a movie in 2012, and part 3 in 2013.

So far, the only place in the Atlanta area advertising the movie is in Duluth for this Friday and Saturday. The producer is encouraging people to contact their local theaters and ask for it to be shown. I plan on calling the theater in Hiram when I get home and request it be shown. I think everyone should do the same.

The producer is also banking (pun intended) on the Tea Party members and supporters to see the movie. In all, this is expected to be 47 million people according to polls.

I haven't read the book in years. I still have it and The Fountainhead around here somewhere. I should re-read.

How many of you have read it?

I think Atlas has already Shrugged and is fixin' to take a dump on the world if we don't run P-Bo out of Washington on a rail :Stick

I got a reply from 278. They said this movie opened with 1/10 th the number of prints (I assume that's the available copies) that movies usually do, and they simply can't get one yet. They are hoping for late May.

The guy who responded seemed very helpful and sincere.

I hope that they noticed that Duluth Georgia was the highest grossing screen for Atlas Shrugged in the country.

I received the same email today. Hopefully, we will have it in town next month sometime.

Pft..they must not like me. I did not get an e-mail. :( Good to know that we might get it here though!

Edit: I did get an e-mail, it was in my spam. :)

I got it too. I wonder if there is any way that the producers could make more prints? That seems like the cheapest part of the deal, and it is costing them money.

I would imagine the producer would have to take some of the money from ticket sales and quickly make additional prints if were to stand a chance of recouping the money he invested to make the movie. With the limited number of prints he has now, it would make it very difficult for him to break even. I think it would be a financial disaster for him if he didn't get the additional prints out there. If he doesn't, people will soon forget about it as word of mouth right now is his biggest advertisor. If he doesn't make a profit, I doubt we see Part 2.
