I still don't get why a laser weapon is so great. It only shoots in a straight line while conventional weapons can change course in mid flight. Conventionals are a heck of a lot cheaper too, unless you plan on shooting down a whole lot of planes, like tens of thousands of them.

Speed, Light Speed! Imagine 50 vessels off the coast each with 50 lasers and tracking systems, all interlaced. They could probably take out anything that can be detected. Plus, you can bounce lasers off of mirrors,,, imagine firing one in a fun house!!!
 
Re-charge time would be key. Nothing, well nothing known to man currently, could jump out of the way. So just point and shoot and "next"...
 
I mentioned power source because many years ago, researchers were looking at using large lasers, but at the time they said the only portable power supply that could power one that size would be nuclear.

I suppose they could use an energy storage device such as a huge capacitor bank, but that's where the re-charge issue Mac mentioned comes in. How long in-between shots would be needed for it to charge up?

I'm rather intrigued by this!
