The Paulding County Mental Health Court has been awarded a General Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP) grant from the Association County Commissioners of Georgia Civic Affairs Foundation, for a Caseworker Assistant – Mental Health Court intern. The wage for this position is $15.00 per hour for each hour worked up to 200 hours. This position shall not be entitled to employee benefits, and shall not exceed the grant period from May 1, 2024, to September 1, 2024.

ACCG Internship: Caseworker Assistant – Mental Health Court:

The Paulding County Mental Health Court is seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual with a positive work ethic to fill the position of Caseworker Assistant. This position would be an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in enhancing their knowledge and experience in Mental Health Court, research analytics, and community relations. Furthermore, it gives an individual a chance to learn first-hand about the role of counties and functions of local government, as well as provide practical work experience.

The primary goal of the internship will be to address the need for assistance with the participants of the Mental Health Court, which is a program that offers a less costly, more effective alternative to incarceration that improves the response to individuals with mental illnesses who have come in contact with the criminal justice system. Participants are provided intensive outpatient mental health and substance abuse counseling, medical follow-up, frequent random drug and alcohol testing, random home visits, and strict curfew monitoring. Rapid growth in the program has signaled assistance with the organization and scheduling of participants, as well as the development of resources. Key duties of the position would include: scheduling participants for court dates, scheduling counseling sessions, and scheduling classes to ensure success in the program and accelerate the pathway to graduate the program. A primary project will be to develop communication with community businesses to establish a data bank of community businesses to implement a larger database of community service providers for participants. Further, if time permits, the intern will work on developing a collaborative data base of health, dental, transportation, and job services for the participants.

The internship benefits include skills in interview, research, assessment, scheduling, and court experience. Skills that will help them prepare for their career choice. Furthermore, the intern program will benefit the County by organizing and streamlining scheduling and documentation of the needs of the participants in this program and prepare a path for a caseworker to be able to come in and assist in the future.

Minimum Qualifications:

Interns should be currently enrolled in college as undergraduate or graduate students or have recently graduated from college within one year of the grant period. High school students 16 years of age or older who are dually enrolled in a college or university are also eligible. General high school students who have not yet begun college are not eligible.
