Cutting the cable cord Direct TV Now option

Just took a look at their line-up, not bad! Do you know if they get any local channels?

For Mrs. Mac, it fails the Hallmark channel test ... lol

Yea, we have a mixed setup, Comcast for TV, UVERSE for phone/internet for that very reason, when we upgraded our TV, uverse still didn't have Halmark.

I'm so disappointed that YouTube TV isn't offered in Ellijay. I could sign up in Atlanta, but would have to log in from wherever I sign up at least once every three months. Not sure if they require a specific IP address in a service area, or if they would allow a login via cell.

Ok, my "free" Apple TV just showed up.

Watching the clock, so I know how long I have until I can connect it and talk to Siri!!!!

Yes but the quality wasn't terrific. We are looking at bringing home a digital antennae from Papi's work that they no longer use to see how good of a signal we can get for local channels. We are still playing around with options.

We have an antenna only in Hiram now and get all of the networks in better than cable quality. Some of the lesser channels are in and out, but we get over 40 channels total. OTA is a valid choice in my book.

I suspect it is time to make a list of the channels I watch... and do some comparisons of what is available.

I tested an HD Antenna at home and did not get very many channels. I suspect an outdoor HD antenna is prob the best way to get all the channels even here in Hiram. Does not matter too much. I am Xfinity all the way at least for the next 22 months. :)

The transmit power of the OTA channels was greatly reduced when they went digital. With many of the Antennas being in Stone Mountain, a larger outdoor (or in the attic) antenna helps quite a bit. I built an antenna a few years ago and in our attic got quite a number of channels. It helped that we are near the top of the Dabbs Bridge Road Ridge, so had a pretty clear shot at ATL.

When driving on 278 in Hiram, you can see downtown ATL on clear mornings so I suspect an outdoor mounted fairly high would get great signal.

This is what I did. Took the favorites we had, saved in Uverse, and made a quick little spreadsheet. Shows what we like, and what is available from the digital offerings.

A suggestion - get details on what local channels are available. DirectTV in particular has a limited offering, and it is based on where you live.

Overall, so far so good. Had a bit of an issue getting the Apple TV set-up ... I never needed an AppleID or iTunes account. That ate up over an hour getting straightened out.

Getting used to the little remote, it is pretty cool with voice controls. And it doesn't talk back!

Sounds like a plan... do a quick spreadsheet... easy to do comparisons.

Friend has had apple TV for years... took me a while to get used to the simple remote... prefer the multi-button ones... however it looks like the simple remotes are gonna take over.

Customer gave me a digital TV antenna with rotator... meed to get up in the attic and mount it, before it gets hot... I think I live high enough it will do well in the attic.
Then, local channels will not be an issue when choosing a streaming package.

THX for the input...

Here's a little secret: "HD" antennas are just UHF antennas. In our area outdoor antennas are a must. We have an 8 bay UHF antenna, and a high quality VHF antenna running into a two channel amp. The reason for the VHF section is that channel 11 is one of only a handful of stations in the country assigned a high VHF frequency in the HD change over.

Philo does not offer locals.
Also look into Direct TV Now streaming. 60 channels for $35 a month. Right now they are offering $25 off for the first three months for new subscribers, so $10 a month for 3 months. You can get you r locals that way. Hallmark channel is included in that.
We basically only watch Channel 2 Action News and Survivor on network channels. We can watch WSB News through the streaming app live on the ROKU and We can get the CBS app during the time Survivor is on for $6 a month, then cancel it. We have been watching the Olympics through the NBC Sports app on the ROKU for free as well.
I am leaning towards Philo, it has all the channels both of us like and watch, plus more of the channels that I like to watch and it's cheaper than HULU Live.
I'll have figure out SEC Network and the SEC on CBS before DAWG season starts though.

When we lived near Publix on Ridge Road, I got a 100+ mile outdoor antenna, and mounted it in the attic. We got well over 60 channels over the air, including the old timey programming channels that my wife likes (ME-TV, AntennaTV, TV Land, etc.).

LOVE MeTv!!

Ok. Screw HULU Live. The buffering tonight was ridiculous. Switched to Philo. Flawless.
Going to try DirectTV Now over the next day or so.
I’m still going to put up a digital OTA antenna to,see what we get before we make a final decision.

What ever we finally settle on, we're still saving over $1300 a year over Uverse if not more depending on the service(s) we settle on.
Like Pap said way back up yonder ^^, we might even be fluid and use one service for awhile and then switch to another for awhile if there's reason or need to do so. I believe streaming is the future of TV and traditional cable will one day be a thing of the past.

One of the good things about traditional cable 'dying'...

Is the cable only news channels get the majority of operating revenue (pay the bills to stay in business) from cable fees.
Get rid of traditional cable... and places like CNN, LSDNBC, etc... may go broke...
Which IMO cannot be a bad thing... :)

One thing to consider - Buffering may not be the fault of the service itself. If your internet service has it's own tv service, it wouldn't take much screwing around with the network design (oh look, the gateway between HULU's ISP and us is overloading a lot. That's too bad. We need to and bandwidth there one day. ) to try to get you to go the service that pays the most for access to your ISP. I've convinced that half the internet problems I have here are gateway issues between the ATL area and the rest of the country.
