Don't think this has been discussed...

If the Freemasons were a cult, they wouldn't have had my grandfather or my uncle join them.
Especially my grandfather.
If you are running a cult, you want people that you can control.
No one could control my grandfather, not even my grandmother, and she came as close as anyone could.

I've heard people say yes, and no, to this Q. I've never made a study of it, so I've no idea. I do know my dad was a Freemason, years and years ago, but he turned away from it before I was 9 yrs old.

When I read a question like this, I wonder about the definition of the word "cult". I wonder if we're all working on the same definition.

By my definition: no.

But, my definition includes isolation from family and friends and adult brainwashing, maybe even some threats. Definitely some element of control of members. The church I grew up in called Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons cults. True story: the Jehovah's Witnesses built a "church" or whatever they call them straight across the street from my house when I was in junior high (before we moved out into the country). This earned me a lot of uncomfortable extra attention from my own church. At the time, I figured they were worried about competition. I don't consider either of these cults.

After we moved into the country, my new town had a huge Freemasons building. We had our prom and our graduation in that building. I don't have a photo of my own. This photo is not how I would have composed it because it doesn't show the scale of the building. But it was HUGE.

Now, I left the town at age 22. However, what struck me back then was how old all the people were. I know I have read that freemasons are dying out, though I was too lazy to look up the source for this post.

Frankly, I think most of the mysticism surrounding them is either historical or because of lingering secrecy that allows imagination to grow.

Not. I've known many Masonic members, all of them outstanding citizens to their community. Like another other group or organization, I'm sure there are some "weird" ones or ones with "weirdos" among them.
