Ford\'s vision of parental love

Have you driven a new Ford lately?

Heard of MyKey?

Ford decided they would help act as big brother. And they have done it by giving control over quite a variety of actions and responses while in the car. It is geared at reigning in teen drivers, but it can pretty obviously be used against anyone. If you are wondering what I am talking about, check out this http://www.autoevolution.com/news/ford-mykey-system-explained-13465.html

Why am I posting this in Road Rage?

We just spent over 4 hours in a new Fusion (rental). And got listen to a soon-to-be-annoying ring tone, about every 5-15 minutes. Plus see an annoying warning pop up. At 75 miles an hour, warning that you are approaching maximum speed. Slow down to 72, then back to 75 because you got behind a truck or slow driver - repeat the process. Reach 80, repeat the process. Drop down to 78, repeat the process.

Mrs. Mac called the rental car company, and told them to put in her profile - no more Fords.

Hasn't that been around for a while? I have a friend that bought a car for her son, I have no idea what kind, that did something similar. Honestly, if we would have wanted or intended on buying a brand new car when son started driving I probably would have went with something like that.

That's the rental company, not Ford. They had to program the keys. I would have called them and told them I was switching rental car companies, not car brands.

I hope that's a feature that can be disabled. We're soon to be in the market for a new or almost new car, and a couple of Fords are on our radar. But not if it has crap like that.

Remember the auto-seat belts that came out years ago? I refused to buy a car because of those too. I think they were GM. I also won't buy a car that has a seat belt chime that doesn't stop. Nothing against seat belts, I just won't have a car that tells me I have to wear them.

And I'm not wild about my factory GPS that can only be programmed when I'm stopped.

It has to be enabled by going through a rather involved process to program individual keys. No programming no big brother.

Exactly ... it is not the default setting on Fords. It's like parental controls on the remote ... you have to set it up. It isn't on until you turn it on.

While I agree that the rental car company should have done a better job, it still bugs me.

It has been around a few years, but from what I read they are adding more capabilities.

Like I said, hearing that stupid ring tone about every 5-15 minutes, over a 4.5 hour drive, was irritating. And we have the return trip to look forward to tomorrow ... :tapfoot2

I would agree that it would bug me too. Why do they even have them for a rental car?

They should have done no job. That's the point. They intentionally went to great lengths to irritate you. I would leave the car at the nearest drop off point and move next door to another company. Then I would write a nasty letter to the company President and to Yelp, and to anyone who will listen. If it had been me, I would have turned around the first time the alarm went off and demanded my money back.
