He has defended Trump on numerous occasions including during the Mueler investigation. He's a civil Libertarian, not necessarily a liberal. His legal commentary, regardless of his stance on a subject is always well supported in the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, or case law. He testified before Congress against Obama's "pen and phone", against warrantless searches, and had some not too kind words for Eric Holder. He's a strong proponent of 2A. I haven't always agreed with him, but he doesn't lie or apply spin. He is if anything consistent in his support for the Constitution regardless of who attacks it.
 
Though I don't particularly care for such antics, this strikes me as one of Trump's mind games. In other words, intentional.
