...is how Catholics and Protestants can interact, and discuss our relatively small differences while remembering that it's small in comparison to the gift we share.

I never understood the big tiff between them that we often see.

Amen to that, brother!!! The church (at large) today is so utterly fragmented that I just want to shake people when they get started on their rants about if you don't believe this, blah blah blah. "Well, that Joel Osteen, he's just Christianity Lite." "Well, those Catholics pray to Mary, so you know they can't be saved.." AD. FREAKIN'. NAUSEUM. I don't care what any Christian believes as long as they believe the basics. It's between a person and God what they believe or don't, and I am not the Holy Spirit. (I know some of you think of me as such and think I could never do wrong, but sadly, this is not quite the case. ;) )

I would also include anyone of a non-Christian faith (Jews and Muslims alike) and people of no faith at all. What you believe is up to you. If you are a good and decent person and believe in good and decent principles, I'm proud to associate with you. I rarely discuss other faiths, but I will admit to making a snide remark or three about Jehovah's Witnesses. But I include them in this as well.

Below are part of the lyrics of a great old song by Russ Taff):

Sometimes it's hard for me to understand
why we pull away from each other so easily
even though were all walkin' the same road
Yet we build dividing walls between our
brothers and ourselves, but I, I don't care
What label you may wear, if you believe in Jesus
You belong with me, the bond we share
And all I care to see it will change the world forever
if you will join with me, join and sing, sing...
Chorus:
You're my brother you're my sister
so take me by the hand
Together we will work until He comes
There's no foe that can defeat us
if we're walkin' side by side
As long as there is Love
We will stand

Admittedly, I am enjoying the Catholic presence here. They have managed to maintain a certain beauty and elegance that we Protestants haven't done so well with.

We can learn from each other. But when we get to Heaven, I think we'll all sit together.

Well said, brother...well said. I'm very High Church inside myself. (If that makes any sense.)

I was going to say this in that other thread, but it really wasn't the place.

If you traced ALL religions back to their start, you come to a single point in time when there was only one religion (of sorts). Then just in many of today's churches, differences in opinion develop and people went their own way to form their own church, their own beliefs. They may seam very different now, but way back then they were not. Just like man ventured out among the wildernesses, they took their own interpretations of an event that was the start of THEIR religion.

We are ALL God's children, no matter what color, race or beliefs!

Uh uh. Can't. My Dad says the Baptist have their own private room. Well, that cuz they think no one else is there. But still. :laugh

That's just so other Baptists can't see us drink alcohol and dance.

Since we were all to go out to all the world and spread the good news... what type of witness is it when "religious" (and I'm using that loosely) people cannot even worship together because of manmade hurdles?

Christianity is not a list of things to do—it is accepting that Christ has done everything we need to be right with God—and he did it on the cross.

God did not tell us to splinter in to different church denominations!

It’s the manmade list of things to do that causes us to look like hypocrites to seekers and those who don’t know Christ.

People who do not have a relationship with God, or understand that Jesus died on the cross for their eternal life - who may be watching those who say they do... only see a hypocritical example.

Why would they want to become a part of God's family ...when they see:
a) those in Christian churches fighting over thier manmade rules
b) Christians not loving everyone as God commanded?

Might as well become a part of Scientology. :whistle

pft... I never bring up my religion since a school secretary told my son and me that we were going to burn in hell because we were Catholic and have not been saved. There are some interesting beliefs among some of the Christians here.

I could not agree more!!! Two Scriptures on this, one from Jesus and one from Paul. The translation here is the New Living Translation for better understanding, but the King James Version of both passages uses the phrase "tradition of men".

Mark 7:8 (New Living Translation) - For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.

Colossians 2:8 (New Living Translation) - Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

Well said, FW...well said.
