Pentagon says airliner shot down by Iranian anti-aircraft missile

Wouldn't surprise me. Considering the circumstances at the time it's possible that it could have been an unfortunate mistake.

Now many liberals (Mayor Pete is one I saw on twitter) are blaming Trump for the plane getting shot down. Stupid!

I read that a lot of Canadians were lost on the flight. Why would anyone in their right mind from the west visit Iran?
A lot of them were Canadian Nationals that were born in Iran, visiting relatives during the holidays. Some of the Iranians were students studying in Canada. A lot of Iranians emigrated to the US and Canada when the Shah was deposed.

Thanks for that info...I had the same thought as Sound Guy when I heard it was half full of passengers who were headed to Canada.

If an Iranian SAM took the plane down; that would explain why the Iranians are refusing to let Boeing have the black box.

Honestly, we all know that it was a missle... sadly that is exactly why culturally they are in the dark. Their whole existence is anti-life.

Thousands of years spent killing. They will spend a thousand more. Their goal, and the only reason the world pays attention to them is that they want to dominate with a nuclear bomb.

I don't think it really matters what type of missile it was, or whether anyone is finally given the black box. The video speaks to what went wrong.

Well, it *could* still be an accidental engine explosion. At full climb out power, if a disc came apart suddenly and the containment failed (which has happened several times) then shrapnel could damage the wing as well as decompress the cabin, bringing down the plane.

That said, I watch an airlines pilots board and obviously this is big news in the safety forum.

Their thoughts:

Last week, we took out Salami.
In “retaliation” the Iranians lob 15 missiles at a couple of US bases.
Within the same hour of their missile attack, there just happened to be a couple of earthquakes in Iran.
Then an airliner just happens to crash in Tehran. Reports indicate that it was already on fire when it went down.

Sounds to me like someone in Iran was spooked by the earth rumbling from an earthquake, assumed it was bombs going off as a result of another U.S. strike in retaliation for their retaliatory attack. Then a large airplane shows up on radar near Tehran. The left hand doesn’t communicate with the right hand.
I will let someone else figure out the rest.

I had not thought about an anti aircraft crew thinking that the earthquake was bombs going off nearby and figuring the plane they saw was an enemy.

2500+ hours in 737's and an engine fire won't bring a 737 down like that, not that quickly anyway. Look at the photos of holes in the wing. Could be from engine parts but I'd say that's not likely considering how the Iranians are reacting. No country capable of reading out the devices will ever get their hands on either CVR or FDR.

Fragments of what appears to be an SA-15 were allegedly found in a Tehran neighborhood near the crash.

It appears to be the forward fins to me. And, I know Surface to Air missile systems.

Could be SA-15. In 2005/6 Iran acquired them. Thought it more logical to be SA-6.
The engines looked to be in good shape from the imagery shown thus far. So, I can't see anything causing an uncontained engine failure/fire. Look at the blades, they are all there. Also, look at the kinetics of the engine. That big of a mass is not even disfigured.
I would not be surprised if Iran doesn't start washing all of the pieces with soap and water to get explosive residue off the parts/pieces.
The small rods from the explosive war head should still be evident and easy to notice.
The explosive is easy to detect.
What will be interesting is if our RJ's and other assets picked up a scrum half radar going into high PRF. What these Iranians don't realize is lots of electronic vacuum cleaners out there snorting up electrons and identifying purpose and location of those trons.
Wreckage spread out. Lots of small tiny fires. No "smoking hole". wreckage impact was fairly flat. Not fan shaped and not vertical.

According to numerous sources the Iranians have 29 TOR missile systems which fire the SA-15. It’s sort of a tank chassis with radar, a three man crew, and either 8 or 16 missiles depending on model. The missile is popped out of its tube by a gas cartridge and then ignites its engine. This is the eight missile model.

"U.S. intelligence picked up signals of a radar being turned on, sources told CBS News. U.S. satellites also detected two surface-to-air missile launches, which happened shortly before the plane exploded, CBS News was told."

Looking more and more like a panic shoot down.
