Data from the 2012 National Survey of Youth in Custody found that 32.1 percent of Paulding juveniles reported that they were victimized sexually by either staff or other juveniles at the center.

That exceeded the national rate of 9.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Paulding also had the highest rate of staff-on-youth sexual victimization (31 percent). About 7.1 percent of respondents said the staff sexual misconduct was the result of force or other forms of coercion.

Wow. This is outrageous and sad.

It's a sad article, and although I'm glad studies exist to continue to keep this issue relevant, I am skeptical of the accuracy of the numbers.

With that said, I hope my skepticism is right.

:(

I'm also skeptical, but I have a feeling that there is merit to some of the reports.

I have some knowledge of the juvenile justice system in Georgia, and I do not discount this survey as lightly as I might otherwise would have. Georgia's program has a long history of troubles.

I wonder if they are counting accusations as reports?

Otherwise I call BS on this report

I would never just discount a report of children and sexual assault. I do believe the numbers are probably a bit higher than all actuality, but my concern would be that it is considerably higher here than the national average that I would also think has some false accusations. Even if you take a % out for false on both we are still higher. How is that explained? (Really, I am asking.)

Report: Georgia among worst for sexual assaults on juveniles in custody
http://www.ajc.com/news/news/state-regional/report-georgia-among-worst-for-sexual-assaults-on-/nYDzr/

Rick McDevitt, president of the Georgia Alliance for Children, said his own research regarding sexual and physical assaults from a few years ago was in line with the report.
“We’ve long said those facilities are out of control and the state does a poor job at protecting vulnerable children,” McDevitt said.
Clayton County Juvenile Court Judge Steven Teske, who serves on the judiciary advisory council for the Department of Juvenile Justice Board, said the findings were distressing. But he believes Niles, who assumed the job in November, and his predecessor, Gale Buckner, had cracked down on staff misconduct.

The president of the GA Alliance for Children believes it and the Clayton County judge on the council does not deny it, citing a crack down on misconduct.
(He did note the study could be residual and things are being investigated more.)

I just find this disturbing and sad that it is happening at all. One or hundreds. :(

Oh boy...now St. Radial will be lying about his age and trying to get arrested.

OK, seriously....I bet the numbers are slewed somewhat. But I also suspect the numbers are still far too high.

That is what I think. There is always a margin of error or even out and out lies, but it does seem to be a problem. :(

Wow. After reviewing that I remembered what my Dad said "where's there's smoke, there's fire". A 30% number is way too high to ignore.

Just for the record, I AM a juvie and I do not have to TRY, I have never had a problem getting arrested.
I learned how to do that when I was 17.
(it just came natural like)
