More detailed article on AJC

And from what WSB is reporting it sounds as though he likely broke his neck during the tackle ... "instantly went limp and unconscious"

They've updated the AJC article ...

...Turman died of a broken neck later Friday night at Grady Memorial Hospital. The Medical Examiner’s Office said Turman’s death resulted from his neck vertibrae being broken “due to blunt force trauma.”...

Very sad. Feel for the family and all players involved.

Though probably no one's fault, I bet the player(s) who tackled him will have a terrible burden to carry.

And I see new regulations coming...

I didn't hear the rest of the story, but I did hear a doctor mention this morning that the break, on it's on, doesn't normally cause death. :(

This is a very scary story for me.

In addition, they are reviewing any recording of the incident, and interviewing witnesses, and it is clear that this was not some sort of abnormal or "spear" type tackle, and the kid wasn't accidentally kicked as was first reported. It appears to be a clean, routine tackle with no more than normal impact on his head and neck. There has been some speculation, and it's just that, that he may have sustained an earlier unreported injury that was exacerbated by this tackle. We may never know.

It seems by all accounts that this was a great kid who had a far less than perfect childhood. It really is a tragedy.

One report I heard on the radio was that your child was much more likely to suffer these types of injuries from a fall from a bicycle or diving into a pool. I do hope they investigate further.

And, yes, it really is tragic.
