Spanish

I have seen an increase in job requirements for applicants to be bilingual. It really pisses me off.

I had a cousin that was bilingual, we didn't talk about it, it was supposed to be the family secret.

I guess what really pisses me off about this is because there are so many illegal immigrants in this country and the majority of them are from Mexico. I hire people all the time, but I will not hire anyone who cannot speak English.

Get used to it.
I predict that spanish will be the language of the US in 50 years.
Of course I could be mal.

I'm not in favor of granting amnesty to illegals. We have immigration laws that are supposed to punish employers who hire illegals. We have immigration laws that are supposed to deport illegals. We need to start enforcing those laws. If we did, it would take away the opportunities for illegals to get jobs and they would start to leave and take away the incentive for others to come.

There's too many Republicans now who want to grant amnesty to illegals. Jeb Bush's comments they didn't commit a felony when crossing our borders illegally and they did it out of love for their family only goes to prove Republicans, like Democrats see them as potential voters down the road because there are an estimated 11-14 million of them in this country.

The government tried this in 1986, believing it would deter other illegals from entering the country. At that time it was 3 million illegals who were granted amnesty. Now it's 4 times that. Here's the problem: they're taking jobs away from your grandchildren. Now don't give me any crap they're doing jobs US citizens won't do because that's simply not true. They're taking construction jobs that used to pay US citizens a pretty good wage. They're taking factory jobs that used to pay decent US citizens decent wages.

There are so many of them here now that many employers are requiring the managers and supervisors they're hiring to be bilingual. It's affecting the current working class of US citizens today. So what's the plan, force our children and grandchildren to learn Spanish in school?

Sometimes, folks need to communicate with people who speak Spanish in order to do business with them. Perhaps, they are simply looking for bilingual employees so they can provide good customer service... :dunno

I adore the Spanish language, and I love latin culture. Always have, always will. Studied both for years. My knowing Spanish has been helpful to me, and my family, a number of times.

The businesses are making a business decision. They can make more money with a bilingual employee.

Speaking for myself, language is fascinating.

Where does it stop?
First they hire bilingual people, what's next?
Bipedal people?

It's driven by our stagnant national economy while the global economy is somewhat growing, as well as more employees today having a native language other than English. I understand the frustration, I really do, however we are never too old to learn a new skill and language is one which people of all ages can equally learn. I'm actually trying to learn the German language although I sorta took a break on it and decided to teach myself how to play the mandolin instead, which I guess can also be considered a new language. Hang in there while you're looking, maybe focus on smaller companies which may have fewer requirements and place more value on a person's experience and abilities.

I just began a rudimentary course on German. I love that language!

I can't tell you how many people I have met that complain about people speaking a language other than English. Yet they expect people to speak English here, in Costa Rica. Wtf?

Learning a new language doesn't happen immediately and it sure as hell isn't easy. And in circumstances that require more than the basics of a language, bilingual is a MUST. I can get by with my Spanish, and I study daily. But I still require english speakers for medical and legal situations. I will always ask for someone that speaks English in those instances. So why wouldn't a native spanish speaking person, ask for the same?

You know what you call a person who speaks only one language? An American.

My stepmother is a first generation Mexican - American, she speaks fluent Spanish... her parents emigrated in the 1950's.

Our four year old daughter speaks whole sentences in Spanish... thanks to endless hours of Dora & Diego.

(^^^ half the time we have no idea what she is saying.) :dunno :dunno :dunno

Well when you got it right the first time, why do it again.
I've never met anyone who traveled to a foreign country and expected them to speak English.
That said, you are there, so you would know, but I find it hard to believe.
Please understand, I don't find what you say hard to believe, I find that attitude hard to believe.

Sorta like a buddy of mine that got a DUI after 15 years and was upset that they counted the 5 he got 15-20 years ago against him.
Like I told him, how dare they look at repeat behavior and try and see a pattern.
After all, if you had killed 5 people 15-20 years ago, they shouldn't hold that against you when you kill someone today.
He still was unhappy.

First of all the economy sucks and the unemployment figures really aren't improving. Second, illegal immigrants have taken jobs away from U.S. citizens; jobs that used to pay our citizens pretty well. Third, our supply of labor is much greater than our demand for labor; bringing wages down. We are no longer the richest middle-class in the world.

I'm a firm believer that if a person is going to live in this country they should learn and use the English language. I also believe any American who goes to a foreign country and expects everyone in that country to speak English to accommodate them is a moron.

Now we have members of both political parties who favor giving illegals amnesty - not because they're wanting to be compassionate, but because they see the growing Hispanic demographic in this country as votes in the future.

We have immigration laws in this country that are not being enforced. Illegal immigration is hurting our country's economy and is going to make it difficult for our children and grandchildren to get decent jobs in the future. It's already hurting those who are unemployed and underemployed.
