Squaring off fabric

How do you do it?

From what I have learned you are to hold both salvage edges together and shake it out to even it up. I have also learned that this is difficult for the fabric I buy at JoAnn's. I can't get it square unless I cut off about 6 in. and that is just so wasteful. The fabric I buy at Hobby Lobby is cut much better and I don't tend to have the same problem as w/ JoAnn's.

I have no idea.... I am a newbie! LOL

But, I am now wondering why you do this? Is it to make sure the pattern is aligned? Or is it for specifc projects?

If you really want to do it right, make a small cut, find a string, and pull it all the way out side to side. (Saith the home economics major.) I rarely do that, but in a case where maybe a pattern is very important, you might want to. I generally just do the thing Kattie said, and I RARELY use fabric where a pattern would be that important.

However, I do happen to have a couple of yards of lovely trompe l'oeil (I always have to look that up to remember how to spell it) fabric that I will probably do that with because I REALLY don't want to mess it up.

I am wanting to do it b/c I am cutting strips of fabric and just want it to be right. I am using a cutting board & rotary cutter and it seems to matter more.

Thank you mei lan! I have never heard of that method but makes a lot of sense. I will try it.

That's how I learned too. Sometimes it's really hard to find that string!! But is really is the only way to be sure it's squared.

That's it! When we get moved this week...I will NOT put my sewing machine away. I'm gonna keep it out so I can start sewing again! :)

You all might as well be writing in Greek. I am so lost. I tried to follow along to figure out even what the topic meant, but this is just way to complicated.

Oh just keep hanging around here SD and you can learn with some of the rest of us. I really appreciate the knowledge I have found here.

I get moving out to the country, but Rockmart? :D :D :D

LOL...actually not in the city, just mailing addy. Our new place is closer to the Aragon city limits. Just a mile from the PD, where Marc works, and a mile from where I've interviewed (and temped) for a new job myself. Crossing my fingers, toes, eyes and praying for this one! Esp since gas is getting so darn expensive.

Thanks! We've got all the furniture moved but still have a few things to box up and get moved to our new home. Oh...and dummy that I am, I forgot to pack up my kitchen! LOL
