2 High School Football players die following practices

My son's practice was modified tonight due to the heat. They practiced without shoulder pads. And tomorrow is supposed to be hotter. This is hard to read. Both boys were only 16.

Daughter came in from Hiram color guard practice dragging. Several of the kids fell out today.

We left football practice early because DS said he thought he was going to hurl.

I know after every drill they have the boys take a water break, and they keep the helmets off for a couple minutes.

I'm curious ... do the coaches stress the importance of hydrating before practice, too?

This is so sad and it happens every year. :(

I don't know about the coaches but I know the band director tells the band kids on a daily basis over and over again, DRINK DRINK DRINK before practice..don't wait till practice to drink..you should be drinking all day long! Don't drink soda all day, drink water and gatorade and eat lunch! My daughter was worried about a few of her friends yesterday that fell out during practice. One friend told her she got severe stomach cramps, she couldn't hear anything for the ringing in her ears and she was seeing things. She was so weak she couldn't even drive home.

It's very scarey and I worry. Tomorrow is gonna be even worse so I hope they let the kids either stay inside or take more breaks.

How awful.......my son works out in the heat everyday.....I told him the first sign of dehydrating....is when he stopped sweating and got a chill.... its time to stop.......and take a water break....but yesterday, he got stung by 4 yellow jackets on the forehead....and now both eyes are swollen shut and his face looks like a pumkin...I had tears in my eyes looking at him.......I can't even image losing him......

Kitty, if he stops sweating and gets a chill he could be having heat stroke. He can't wait that long!! The first sign of dehydration is being thirsty. By the time you get that first drink, you are already dehydrated. He needs to drink water or gatorade, all day, every day if he's going to be in this heat.

Sorry about the yellow jacket stings, they are super mean this year. I think it's the heat and dry weather for them, too.

My son marched all four years of HS, it's very, very scary. We did resort to putting up some large canopies to provide some shade during breaks. All that equipment on football players makes it even worse. Praying they all stay safe.

WOW....Thanks....I didn't know that.....someone was telling me that it could be avoided at that point if they would just stop and drink water.........and yeah the yellow jacket got him good yesterday......I felt so bad...it hurt my very soul to look at him......but he came here and I gave him some medicine...but the poison had already took its course.....he is such a mule when it comes to hard work........keeping his body in shape .....lol...

Once you get near the point of dehydration, you're not going to re-hydrate quickly. You will need to get somewhere cool so you can rest and drink water.

Anyone working in the heat should start drinking well ahead of time to build up fluids in their body. Do eat frequently, but small meals and lighter foods. No caffeine; it increases your metabolism which is the wrong thing to do in hot weather. No energy drinks, etc. Red Bull will kill you in this heat.

Sorry for being so graphic, but monitor your urine and how often you go. You should be peeing regularly and it should stay fairly clear. If you aren't going or it's darker in color, you're headed for trouble. Also monitor your sweat. If you stop sweating, get out of the heat.
Sweating is your body's cooling mechanism. If you stop sweating, you're out of coolant.
Some Gatorade can help; but best to dilute it with water and drink lots of water only with it.

Be like the old plow horse; slow and deliberate in what you're doing.

That's tragic. I don't know how those kids practice in this heat anyway. Mine play baseball, and I'm a fanatic about making sure they have water and rags to ice down with. Football seems a little harder, because they don't get a break in the dugout, and they have all those pads to wear.

I wonder what policy changes this will bring about. I think our high schools are very aware of the dangers, and they seem to be very vigilant to keep the kids safe.

It's just sad.

You're correct. Parents should ensure their children are drinking lots of water to keep hydrated. Take it from a guy who has spent a lot of time in deserts. I made my soldiers drink water all the time. Whenever I ran the rifle range, even here in GA, I would give the command to drink water between each firing sequence of qualification as they were wearing their body armor and helmet on the range. Those items will trap a lot of body heat and make them sweat even more. If your urine is not clear, you are becoming dehydrated. If your urine is dark in color, you are indeed dehydrated and you better start drinking lots of water. Heat injuries can be deadly. This is one reason why I'm against schools having vending machines that sell soft drinks as they have caffeine in them and will contribute to dehydration.

As long as your child doesn't have any health issues that indicate otherwise ... they should be drinking AT LEAST their body weight in fluid ounces of water every day. 100 lb child should be drinking 100 ounces of water. That is spread out through the day and that is every day ... not all in the afternoon and only during some days.

That's just the hydration. You can still stroke out in the heat even if you are fully hydrated. These kids have got to be reminded over and over that it is NOT a sign of weakness if they need a break. It doesn't matter what anyone else says. Not everyone's body works the same. Find shade, take gear off, pour cool (NOT cold) water over wrists, cool damp to wet cloth on neck, do what they need to get their temps back down.

I agree with UM..they don't need to think they are being weak if they have to sit down. One of the girls yesterday told my daughter she didn't want to take a break cause she didn't want the other girls to think she was a wimp. She ended up falling out. I told my daughter this morning, the minute you feel dizzy, weird or whatever, take a break no matter what.

Did anyone else see where the cobb school district has sent out a notice that says:
Message from Cobb County Schools: Due to extreme heat index, all outside activities at CCSD schools are cancelled between noon and 6:00 PM until further notice.

maybe Paulding should do the same

According to the article, it's the first one in 5 years. Unfortunately, 2 were lost on the same day. My son's coach told him to take a water bottle to school (I hope that doesn't get him in trouble there). I guess we'll see how that goes.

The article also goes into ways they are working toward making school sports safer in the heat.

You need to push that issue. He should be drinking all day so he's good and hydrated before he gets out in that heat.

Keeping him hydrated was a lot easier before school started. I am hopeful he'll be able to drink frequently through out the day at school. I guess we'll have a long talk as soon as he gets home.

I read somewhere where the school was allowing kids to bring water on the bus due to no AC......not sure if it was Paulding or not...
