Baltimore bridge collapse

Savannah's port traffic will see a huge increase, particularly their RO/RO shipping. Investors are shrewd and always look for ways to make some quick cash.
Say what you will about Brian Kemp, he's a firm believer about Georgia's ports.

The ship lost power a few times, and by the time it came on again, it was too late. If you watch, there is also massive smoke coming out of it. Something bad was going on in the ship as they started out of the port.

The MV Dali approaches from the north-east but approximately four minutes and 20 seconds before impact all lights aboard the ship go out, a clear indication of a total onboard loss of power. One minute and ten seconds after this visual indication that all is not well onboard some lights are restored, and they continue to turn on and off to varying degrees until the collision.

During these last minutes, the MV Dali turns sharply — particularly for a ship of its size — to starboard, putting it on course for the bridge support. From three minutes until impact until the strike a very large plume of thick, dark smoke appears to pour from the ship’s chimney, indicative of either the engine working very hard or a fire onboard. In the case of the crew being aware of the imminent disaster and attempting to prevent the collision, the volume of smoke would likely mean failed engines being restarted or — if already running after the total electrical failure — the engines being put under a high load to slow the ship down.

Along with the loss of life, the loss of that bridge is going to make travel in that area a mess. And to Rhett’s point, until they can clear the wreckage of the bridge, that harbor is CLOSED. And replacing it won’t be cheap or quick. It took 5 years and 60 million dollars in the 70s to build it the first time.

I had thought they were suppose to have barriers guarding the bridge supports to avoid just that scenario and apparently they weren't there or didn't work, a very costly and deadly mistake. I also noticed that there were ships in the harbor at the time, and will be there for a while.

Maryland governor says ‘heroes’ stopped cars from crossing bridge after ship’s mayday callhttps://www.today.com/news/baltimore-maryland-francis-scott-key-bridge-collapse-rcna145061

According to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, the ship issued a “mayday” call before colliding. The workers on the bridge jumped into action and halted traffic, saving many lives.

Let’s see what all the Engineers have to say about this then….Why would there be flames - surely metal & concrete don’t spontaneously combust - obviously there would be sparks via friction?

Too soon?

Yeah, I think the lawsuits will go on longer than the reconstruction. What I haven't heard yet is if the hull of the ship was holed when it hit the concrete pillar holding up that leg. If there is any chance of it sinking if they pull it off, or figure out HOW to pull it off, the port could be closed a long time.

I would expect that the steel frame of the bridge was grounded for lighting strike protection and of course as soon as the bridge hit the water, it would be grounded via the salt water. So not only would it spark when the wires were parted, when ever they hit the bridge structure, there would be more sparking until the breakers blew.

I think they will keep the ship there until the victim recovery is complete, then they'll bring in a barge crane to pick it up in sections.

I'll predict they have the channel cleared for water traffic within 3 weeks. As for the bridge, do they really need to rebuild it?

Flames on the ship or somewhere else?
I'm sorry, the bridge.

There were conspiracy theories about why the top of bridge could be seen with what looked like explosions. The tongues were wagging that it was a terrorist set up because "clearly" there had also been explosives on the tops of the bridge. They were saying that the ship was compromised by nefarious people getting into the controls and shutting everything down.

If they have it then I'm pretty sure we do too. The question is would a country use it and risk the consequences of it being revealed and "proven."
