Baltimore's Mayor is an Idiot

I'm not making excuses - the quote my MLK just spoke to me so I shared it. But, it's also worthy to note that now is not the time for privileged white folks to be armchair quarterbacks on race relations.

"privileged white folks" ???

This has nothing to do with race relations,
Baltimore is a fully integrated city. Period.

Privileged white folks?
Exactly who are these "privileged white folks"?

Have you and the wife been talking behind my back, cause this sure sounds like her.
I guess I will have to put you on the list of people the wife is not allowed to be alone with. :)
I FORBID IT!

(I do that for my own sake, cause I know neither one of you two will obey me)
(even the animals don't obey me ::(

Your wife and I are besties - we will tell you when you can come out of your privileged corner... :whistle

Lisa, if you have the time, I would be more than happy to appraise you of my historical and cultural "White Privilege" going back to the time when my ancestors were held in chains right here in the United States of America.

But more to my point, most people in our country who have what one would call "privilege" did not receive that honor as either a gift from the government or society. Most who have that either earned it themselves or it was earned by the last two generations of ancestors, and slavery was more than two generations ago. In fact, White and Asian slavery existed long after Black slavery did in the United States. Far to the contrary of the popular story, I myself have never received favor because of my race, but I saw less qualified Blacks and Asians gain entry to Georgia Tech before I did. I have also been turned down for two jobs that went to less qualified black females. I do not view the fact that my ancestors and myself worked hard to get where we wound up to be a "privilege" but I find it to be the well deserved fruits of our private effort to build a home in this country.

Those who are so damn concerned with "White Priveledge" need to concentrate on what they need to do to better themselves and less on what those who have already done so gained in return for their efforts. We are three generations post Dr. King, but lets not forget the quote for which he is most famous (Hint, it has to do with character).

Don't make me come over there.
(where is there?)

Sure wished my "privileges" would kick in sometime soon! I'm tired of living week to week, check to check, just hoping we make it to the next check!

No one and no agency has ever given me a dang thing, even when we asked for help. So there has been absolutely no "privilege" being a smart ass white boy in my family!

Instead, an unlikely coalition of gang members, pastors and community activists successfully turned away would-be trouble-makers before they even crossed the street.
On social media, word spread of a "purge," or a flash-riot like those that swept Baltimore city Monday, targeting the mall, which was closed today as a precaution. Several area businesses also closed, and some even boarded up their windows.
Gang members, including Orlando "Magic" Gilyard, a Bloods gang member dressed in red, were among the first to arrive at the mall this afternoon. Their message to any potential rioters: go home.

Gilyard said that rumors last week that Baltimore's gangs had banded together to target police officers were untrue. The gangs had called a truce, he said, but only to protest in support of Freddie Gray. Monday's riots, Gilyard said, were a perversion of that deal.
"This is not – this can't be for Freddie Gray. Are you really about to go out here and die for a pair of tennis shoes? You're spitting on his grave. Come on now, you're disrespecting his family. We can't have that," Gilyard said. "We're not allowing that today. We're going to try to do whatever we can do to stop it."

Seems to me the mayor knew her citizenry better than us. She absolutely made the right call by asking for restraint from the police. Tue night would not have been peaceful had there been conflict between police and rioters on Mon night.

Ummm...there was "conflict" between rioters and police on Monday night.

Buildings were burned, police and citizens were attacked by violent thugs.

And she had the police hold back their response on Monday night..the only night of truly hardcore rioting and looting. She made the right call because Tue we saw community leaders...clergy, politicians, gang leaders, etc....all come together and agree to handle things peacefully. If the cops had came out swinging Monday night and protesters were seriously injured or killed by the police, yeah, Tuesday onward would not have been pretty.

I'm not happy about that, either. But, all things considered, the last thing the Baltimore police needed to do to people protesting, rioting, and looting either because of, or under the guise of, the brutality of the BPD, is to have the BPD hurt and or kill more people.

She either got lucky or had already had dialogue with community leaders prior to Monday night...I read about a similar move by a mayor in NYC some time ago and it blew up in his face...the citizens didn't rally together to make peace and the mayor looked incompetent as more things burned and more stores looted.

Liberals and conservatives rarely agree, this is a prime example. She should be recalled and replaced by one with courage to uphold the law and the integrity of her police department. You don't compromise with criminals, not even for just one night.

I can think of no situation in which the words "if they want to destroy, we've made room for that too" are appropriate.

I was watching the news and heard you are now a racist if you call rioters who happen to be black "thugs." The accusation is when you use the word "thug" it's the same as using the "n" word. The pastor who officiated Freddie Gray's funeral agrees. He was shown a clip where Obama and Baltimore's mayor called the rioters "thugs" and was asked if they were racists. He replied, that was "black on black crime." The ship is sinking.
