Investigators said the mother was at home with her child and the dog at about 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. She said that when she left the room to go to the restroom, everything was okay, but that when she returned to the room, it was clear that the dog had attacked the child and killed him.

The child was not screaming? How long was this woman in the bathroom? I am so sorry and my heart breaks for the loss of this child. I just can't get past leaving a large dog alone with a toddler.

The breed should be eliminated. These stories make me sick.
I would argue that point with you.

There is so much that is unknown about this story. Were there no screams made by the child? How long did the mother spend in the bathroom? How was it "obvious" that the dog did something? I'm thinking there is more to the story, much more.

Pit bulls are not the problem.

And yes, in all fairness, my son owns the smaller version of a pit - American Staffordshire Terrier. He is an extremely sweet dog that wants to please. Yes, he can scare the heck out of someone if he wants - but he'd much rather play and be taken for a walk.

I had a one too. Best dog I've ever had. Sasha was sweet & playful til her last year. She was 13 when I finally had to let her go. Absolutely broke my heart. She was my buddy, walking partner and my shadow...going everywhere I went. I still miss her so much.

Pits have a lot of power & strength. I never played tug of war with her and her toys cuz i didnt want her to ever learn that it was ok to lock her jaws down in anything. Started teaching her as soon as I got her, at 3 months old, that I was in control of her mouth. If I said "drop it", she'd let go of whatever she had in her mouth.

She had to have heard something. You don't leave a toddler unattended for that long, at all. And, why would she run into the yard and leave the child and the dog in the house?

Very, very sad. That poor baby.

I do understand good owners defending the breed, however, the breed is an extremely strong and powerful animal.

We had cocker spaniels, apparently also known for "being bad". My female was the most amazing dog up until her death. My male "went bad" and had to be put down after aggressive behavior toward my son.

I had a German Shepherd when I lived at home. He was my constant companion and even shared my bed.

If either of these dogs had bitten, they would have never done the damage that a pit bull has the ability to inflict. To deny that just isn't responsible.

My thoughts, except the last. I do not want to know why she ran out, maybe that was where the "it was obvious he killed" came.

Just saw video of the dog being removed from the house ... looked like its face was covered with blood. :(

They also showed dad, who appeared to be handcuffed. What did I miss?

I didn't see dad in handcuffs on the 10 p.m. news and they didn't say anything about it. In fact, they said that they didn't expect charges to be filed against the parents.

I think he was detained because he wouldn't obey the popo in not busting through them to get to the house. IDK...that's just what I heard from a snippet on one of the news things.

Why anybody would EVER leave a 2yo alone with any dog is beyond me. :sigh:

It's entirely possible that they may have had to cuff him briefly while trying to get him calmed down. The video that I saw showed him on the ground, legs out in front, hands behind his back in a way that looks very much like they were cuffed. He may not have been but it sure looked like it.

I can't answer that part. When our rottie was alive, the princess never played with him alone. He was a very kind and gentle boy, but I didn't want to push my luck and find out that he lost patience with the princess after the fact... He never did, although it used to scare the beejeebus out of me when he would run up to her and push her down on her bum and run away. He was always very protective of her and she still misses him (she was 3 when he died).

That was the idea I got...not that he was arrested.

Hey look at me being all slow and stuff ... panda covered the cuff thing about a day and a half before me. :soashamed
