Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has signed legislation that would require thousands of people applying for welfare to pass a drug test before they could receive benefits.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the law over the opposition of Democrats.

Backers say it will ensure that welfare benefits are used for their intended purpose and not to subsidize drug use and criminal activity. Democrats said the measure places an unfair burden on the poor...

Tell you what else I'd like to see them do ... cut way the heck back on some of the pure crap that EBT can be used for. And no way should it be ok to use EBT at gas stations when less expensive options are right next door. That's my money, spend it right. (We all know they are cheating the system and spending it on smokes and beer at those places anyway.)

My sister has a part-time job at a grocery store...she has stories that will curl your hair. Or give you a heart attack from sheer fury. :sigh:

i think you should have to take on for any benefits including Medicaid, Welfare, Unemployment ect......

I'm assuming that it is referring to the way most of these work ... the welfare recipient has to pay for the test either up front and is reimbursed if clean or the state pays for the test and the person must repay the state if they fail. Don't recall exactly which way it goes. Tough crap ... want welfare, don't use. No "unfair burden."

I haven't figured out the "unfair burden" yet either. You can get a drug test for $35.

So if they are not using drugs they get reimbursed and the welfare. Um, where's the problem?

I totally agree. I see no unfair burden either. That's just the argument that is used. It's like the bull they use to argue against voter ID laws, that they somehow are unfair to minorities, the elderly, and the poor. No they aren't. They all have easy access to government issued IDs, with minimal planning they can all get them with little or no transportation costs. It is just the usual Democratic battle cry.

I think this should have been required a long time ago! Most employers require applicants or new hires to get drug tests done, so why not require those who want government aid to get one as well?!

Deciding which family member will be able to get clean enough to be eligible for benefits.... :dunno

::ditto I have a cousin and his wife that know how to work the system and put alot of effort into getting into any "entitlement" programs available instead of working. Food stamps, housing & utility asst, medicaid, etc. If it's out there, they are in the system.
