My guess is that they know they don't have the votes to convict.

This was plain meanness from the Democrats, they wanted to kick him while he was down. Pretty much the entire congress needs to go.

If there are 50 republicans, 48 democrats and 2 independents,,, why are the republicans the minority? Is this some type of new 'Socialist' math? What special rights and privileges are republicans entitled to as a minority???
Asking for a friend.

The two independents tend to vote with the Democrats and in the event of a tie, the VP votes to break it, which means Harris, so they consider that a Liberal majority.

Just reading an MSN article on Biden's plans. Makes me sick to read that crap. Not only his plans, but the way they make it sound like Trump had no issues with the Dems on becoming president but the GOP is planning on making trouble for Biden. What BS.

I really don't care what they tend to vote for,,, the simple fact is, they are not democrats, they should not count as part of their herd! Suppose we say they generally vote as republicans on certain matters therefore they belong to us! They don't belong to either side which makes the republicans the majority. Oh crap, that makes McConnell the leader again,,, Never mind!

Lol, that's not what I was pointing out,,, but they'll buy enough rino's to be sure Trump can not run again. Get ready to roll out Tom Selleck for president!!
I don't think so.

And honestly, I'm not so sure Trump will run again in 2024. Too old, for one thing.

Trump can be quite powerful through other means, and they know that which is why they are trying to compromise him in every manner possible.

Can Trump be convicted of impeachment after he leaves office?

Alan Dershowitz (a Democrat) says no. He says the constitution is clear that the entire reason for impeachment is for congress to have a means of removing a sitting president from office. If Trump is not a sitting president, he cannot be removed through impeachment.
Interesting!

Thoughts?

That's what I thought as well, but somewhere I thought I read that they impeached and tried US Grant after he left office, and that if the impeachment charges come with a proviso that he be banned from holding public office, they may proceed after he leaves office. But all of that comes from the news media and other online 'Experts', I really have no clue. :dunno:

But whether 17 Republicans, the number that would be needed to join 50 Democrats to reach the required two-thirds threshold, vote to convict the president will rely largely on what McConnell does.

McConnell, who has been reported to be angry with the president over his behavior since the election, has left open the door to voting to convict Trump.

"While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote, and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate," McConnell said in a note to Republican colleagues on Wednesday.

Grant was threatened with impeachment by some Democrats, but it never happened.

I don't know of any actual Constitutional scholars who say they can't impeach after he leaves office or that they can't impose almost any penalty they choose. I do know of a few who think it's a bad idea morally and/or politically.
