Millage Increase Put on Proposed County Budget

Paulding County commissioners agreed Thursday to amend the proposed fiscal year 2013 budget. They are set to vote on it later this month.
Commissioners at their July 10 board meeting voted 3-2 against a proposal that included a millage increase from the current rate of 7.6 mills. But at a work session Thursday morning that focused on the budget, commissioners approved a slate of recommendations that included an increase.

Always right after an election. They would have done this with or without TSplost. Yea, raising our property taxes is so smart, heaven forbid they do this before an election.

I'm mad as fire, they've done this again!!

Of course, votes against it before the election, now amend it.

Look at how he wanted a motion to vote on it, then when asked for further discussion he said there would be; and then once the motion was made and seconded, he took the vote. That was really underhanded and he out and out lied.

I am told that the taxes will not go up and that this would be done to give the public service folks a raise. Also have been told that if property values go up that it will be changed so that taxes will not go up. Think I understood that correctly.

Where will the money come from if our taxes do not go up? I am a little confused.

I will get a little more info and get back to you on that. I think it will be done the same way it was done before and the taxes did not increase. Yes, I know it will still be viewed as an increase. I am not happy about it either. I will be waiting to see who gets the raises. I assume it will be the law enforcement employees.

Incoming revenue have dropped due to continued property values deflation's. This millage increase is just to hold revenues at the current level as should be reversed when revenues increase with property values. I understand why they want the increase, there is little left to cut out of the budget.

But I do not agree with any pay raises when you still have furloughs in place and service closures. While I fully support raises to public safety employees, the amount they are talking about is minimal at best.

And David Austin's action on this when there was still business to be discussed does not look good. I don't know what prompted this quick ending but he should have opened his schedule to make sure this gets done.

Thank you Winchester, I agree. Looks like all David wanted to do was get that millage rate increase. I supported him very strongly in the beginning, now I'm not liking what I'm seeing.

I've known David a long time and this is not his style. I suspect he had something on his schedule that could not be moved, which happens sometimes. It's not right...but it happens. Lets hold judgement to see if they come back and finish the discussion.

I agree with you. I am not liking this either. It does not reflect well on someone who just won re election a few days ago. I will wait and reserve my judgement on the matter until this issue is voted on.

None of this makes any sense.

Sure it does. Government officials never saw a dollar they didn't like and phrases like "cutting back" are simply not understood.
