When this song came out, a girl I dated said this should be my theme song. Many people think to this day that Elvin Bishop sang this song because that was who got credit for it on all the radio airplay. The guy singing is Mickey Thomas of Cairo, GA, a backup vocalist in Bishop's band. In the video, Elvin is the guy on the far left playing the red Gretsch hollowbody guitar. I have one, just like it. Shortly after this, Mickey took over lead vocals for Starship. Starship also recorded the song. It reached #3 when it was released in 1976. The song was included in the soundtrack of the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. The song was released as a single again and reached #1.

 
Shortly after the song came out, I was on a first date with a young lady. We were at a college bar, and the band sang Fooled Around and Fell in Love as we danced. She told me the song must be my theme song. I asked why. She said I must have been through a million girls. That was the only time I went out with her. She forgot the lyrics included, ''...I'd love them and I'd leave them alone.''

I did some checking if any celebrities came from Cairo. There were some. I wonder if cptlo knew any of these were originally from Cairo.

Jackie Robinson
Bill Stanfill (played for the Dolphins, two Super Bowl-winning teams)
JJ Wilcox (played for several NFL teams)

There are a few others I never heard of, so they can't be that well-known.

Yep, I've heard of those.

Teresa Edwards - American former women's basketball player and four time Olympic gold medalist.
Willie Harris - played in MLB
Daryle Singletary - country singer - died a few years ago

I never heard of the last three. Do they celebrate a Jackie Robinson Day every year?
