I wasn't sure if this should go here or in the school fourm. GPS to track skipping students.

Skipping class, though frowned upon, is practically a rite of passage for young teens, but thanks to an elaborate system involving GPS being used by some school districts, it is practically being eliminated completely.

The Orange County Register reports that the Anaheim Union High School District in California is currently participating in a pilot program which involves using a combination of Global Positioning System technology, automated telephone reminders, and one-on-one coaching to cut down on truancy. It's similar to programs being used in Baltimore and San Antonio.
 
Seems like an awful expense to figure out a kid isn't in class. I thought taking attendance each class and tracking the days they are absent was a good enough way of determining truancy. What difference does it make knowing where the absent kid is at?
 
Very good point Fox!! It's so hard to tell people that depend on government to do everything for them that they should know where their kids are and what they are doing. Handing if off to someone else is just so much easier.
 
It doesn't do any good. They "think" that type of GPS tracking will be a deterrent to those who skip, but it won't. Why? Because they KNOW nothing will be done to punish them anyway!

When I was much younger, I worked as a visiting teacher's assistant for the school system. One of my job descriptions was to follow up on truancy issues for 3 schools. I had one child who had missed 35 days by the end of the second month of school. His house was a weekly stop for me (when I could find where they had moved.) They didn't care. They would lie to me about why he was out (if I remember correctly, he had chickenpox 4 times in 3rd grade.) But there was never any consequence for it.

Do that and discontinue any government assistance the parents are receiving.
