Well, my man is finally stepping into the land of technology!
He has had his "flip" phone for several years now. I couldn't convince him to get a blackberry for anything! He's on the road a lot and out of the office. I knew making the change would be good for him, and make him more productive in the field.
This weekend, he finally agreed! So we stopped by Verizon in the mall (since we were there) to check out his options.
After about 45 minutes of shopping and comparing, we had made our selections and were signing the final paperwork. As we were waiting, four teenagers - dressed head to toe in their "goth" costumes - walked by the store. (The store has one complete wall of windows.) The Verizon store is beside the trampoline/bungee thingies in the mall. The four teens stopped to "watch" as others jumped.
One of the boys - with full intention, I might add - placed himself against the wall. Written across the back of his shirt - in HUGE letters was:
DUCK
DITCHES
SOMETHING
SOMETHING
Okay, you get the idea. And I can't tell you what the last two words were, because I was livid! Not only did he "lean" against the window, he repositioned himself to make sure we saw it!!!
Both our boys were with us. I could see the wheels turning in my 10 year old's mind to begin the questions. I'm not ashamed to tell you that our youngest has NEVER been exposed to anything or anyone who would take away his innocence where things like this are concerned. Call me overprotective. Call him sheltered. I'll defend it every day of the week!
Well, I don't know what you would do, but all 5'3" and 110 lbs. of me jumped out of that chair and headed out into the mall to have a little talk with the hoodlum! I let him know that while I understood his "right" to express himself in whatever way he would choose, I had a 10 year old boy that shouldn't have to be subjected to the trash that he so willingly wallowed in.
One of his friends was ready. "Well, if he attends public school, he's already seen worse than that." "Well, he doesn't - not that it gives you a right to be the one take away his innocence!" The offender said, "I don't know what you mean." I explained (as if he didn't know) that his T-shirt was highly offensive. He agreed to put on a jacket, and they walked off, snickering.
Ya know, if they're seeking attention, I'll be glad to give it in this circumstance. I will never understand that type of behavior, but I'll oblige. I was telling a couple of friends about it, and they couldn't believe that I wasn't scared to approach them. I'll be honest - that never crossed my mind. I guess my Momma Bear came out before I could think about what they might do. Anyway, what would you have done?
