The USS Bonhomme Richard to be Scrapped

Inspections and review of the USS Bonhomme Richard, the navy ship that caught fire in July, have determined that it is so damaged it's not economically responsible to repair it for return to service. :(

As many parts as possible will be salvaged for use on the sister ships still in service.

Popular Mechanics

According to a U.S. Naval Institute News report, the Navy conducted a lengthy engineering inspection of the ship and concluded only 40 percent of the Bonhomme Richard is still viable; the service would need to tear down and rebuild the remaining 60 percent. The cost of returning the ship to its original form would total between $2.5 and $3 billion dollars. A new, comparable ship would cost about $4.1 billion.

I did a little research and found it would take between 5 and 7 years to repair it. The last carrier to be commissioned was the USS Gerald Ford. The USS Gerald Ford, a new class of carrier was the last carrier constructed. It came with a price tag of $13.027B. Advanced construction of the Ford began in 2005 and delivery did not take place until 2019. In all it took 14 years to build it. The Ford is the most advanced carrier class. The Bonhamme was a Wasp class carrier.

Construction of another Ford class carrier would most likely take less time than it did the Ford, but still to wait that long being a carrier short in the fleet could be detrimental when the Chinese have been cranking out new carriers. Perhaps it would be best to repair the Bonhamme.

The price tag on these Navy ships are astronomical. I understand the tremendous amount of labor/ technology/ materials involved. I also understand this vessel is kind of a carrier hybrid at least for rotary wing support of landing troops. It just seems like as long as the taxpayers are funding these projects cost over runs and questionable decisions are accepted as business as usual. I get the jest of this article is to reflect the fact that it is just not cost effective to repair her for duty. That is probably the prudent thing to do. It just reminds me of how inefficient and care free the government is with our money. $4.1 billion for a landing vessel seems very high. Especially considering with todays technology the odds of a Marine amphibious assault of any size anywhere is pretty slim. The article seems to imply design flaws in the bulkheads/firewalls may have contributed to the spread of the fire. You would have thought they could have hired a better engineer/designer for $4 billion.

I don't understand why they turned of the fire suppression units while it was in dock. Had they been on, the fire could have been controlled more.

Yeah, I think the real point is "do we want to spend $4b on THAT carrier, which is somewhat outdated to begin with". I can see the point. But you can bet that the Navy will be using this incident to boost their request for a new pretty Ford class carrier in a year or two.

And likely will not get it under a Democrat regime.

Democrats ALWAYS weaken our military when they are in power.

If they would bring troops home from where they have no real purpose, I'd be cool with that. If they would scrap "military-industrial complex" projects that fail to meet goals, I'd be fine with that. No, what they do is cut things like intelligence, training, and supplies. They make more use of our National Guard which is under a different budget for maintaining force strength. Lockheed, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrup, BAE, and General Dynamics never lose.

I don't disagree with this.

No doubt that this country has stuck it's nose where it doesn't belong too many times.

As for advanced military weaponry...the sad reality is that this world is still a very dangerous place, and evil does exist. Our best defense is to always be the biggest and baddest kid on the block. We must always have amazing weapons that strike fear in the hearts of evil so they will think twice about screwing with us, and also so in the unfortunate case that we are forced to use said weapons, we can win.

History shows that time and again, the Democrats ran down the military while they were in power, and that resulted in the Republicans having to throw big money at then when they get into power just to build back up. We went into Viet Nam terribly out-gunned, and that is not acceptable to me.

Now that we will apparently have an administration with close ties to China, I expect that our military will be weakened once again.
