An airport wrecked by a tornado in March reached an important milestone in its recovery Thursday.

A tornado damaged 22 planes, destroyed hangars and damaged the roof of the main terminal at the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport on March 3.

"The progress that has been made came from a lot of volunteers. That's the exciting part about what happened: the cleanup," said Paulding County Commission Chairman David Austin...

I'm glad the airport repairs are coming along. I look at the airport as an asset to Paulding's future economic growth. Small airports always help to attract industrial business. I think once we begin to see our economy make some serious improvements, we will see industrial growth take place in Paulding County that will offer good paying jobs. It's a shame we have those who voice such hatred towards having the airport and have their facts all screwed up on how we were able to obtain it with FAA funding.

It's a shame that folks don't realize how much it is used already. The folks at the Hiram Enterprise (rental car) office can tell you how often they're running cars out there. I imagine that when there is movie or TV filming going on it gets more use, too. It certainly is an added pro when any potential businesses are looking at Paulding as a potential location for opening an office complex or headquarters or regional whatever. It doesn't guarantee anything but it certainly is an extra in the plus column for a lot of these companies. (And I'd rather have an airport than an interstate.)

I agree...the movie studio and airport were money well spent.

I think we will see some revenue coming in from the movie studio as well. I think the problem with so many who are in such opposition to the airport and the movie studio do not want to see any progress in Paulding at all. It's time for them to just get over it. This will never be a rural county with just 30,000 people again. I think I read somewhere the county now has a population of 140,000. The county needs to be able to support the infrastructure for that many people and that means progress has to be made.

Agreed. You cut your suit to fit your cloth.

I see the problem with the Movie Studio as money spent when there was none available. County employees laid off and property values less than they should be with less revenue coming in. That says to me that we did not have the money for this venture.

I see your point of view, but layoffs of county employees were going to happen. This was an opportunity to invest in a venture that was very favorable to the economy of this county. They are currently filming a movie there and the main stars will be there in a few weeks. This movie alone is going to bring money to be spent in our community.

We shall see Fox. It will take awhile to pay off the money they borrowed to build it.

That may be, but at the same time, each time a movie is made there it will generate added revenue in other business within the county. It's like borrowing the money to start a business. You owe money on the loan for years all while the business is making money. Your business spends money with other businesses. The money you make and the money other companies make as a result of your company provides jobs within the community as well as tax revenue.

The movie studio is one I'm not as big of a fan of only because it was more of our money spent than the airport was though I can still see the benefits of it. The timing wasn't pretty but sometimes things work out that way ... that I do know.

I think the movie studio building is a good investment, however I think there should have been some investment by the company who is ultimately using the studio… a little skin in the game so to speak.

Glad to hear they have a movie in production, :cheer1 I just am concerned that as a county we took on all the risk without private monies contributing as well. I don’t think the government should take the risk… I think they should set up an environment that attracts business to the area… not develop land and build buildings.

My understanding is Paulding took out a bond to pay for this.

Had they had a production company put money into it, that kind of deal would have limited the county's revenue on renting the studio to other production companies by having to share the rental income. This way, more than one production company can schedule to rent the studio and the county reaps all the revenue for it.

Thank you ! ! ! :CLAP :CLAP :CLAP :CLAP :CLAP

I still maintain that risking taxpayer dollars to build facilities for
private industry is not the proper role of a limited government.

When counties are competing with one another for industrial companies to locate within their boundaries, you're going to see this happen because they want good paying jobs and the tax revenue those businesses will generate for the county.

The fact is, the housing boom that expanded Paulding's population from 41,611 in 1990 to our current population 142,324 as of the 2010 census. That was a growth rate of 292% over 20 years. Unfortunately, it had a serious impact on our infrastructure; primarily roads, sewerage, water, and schools. This growth also stretches the capabilities of our emergency service departments.

The growth brought in a lot of retail and restaurant businesses, but those don't provide the tax revenues needed to vastly improve the infrastructure needs severely impacted by the population growth the county experienced over the last 21 years. Industrial businesses provide the type of tax revenue needed to improve our over-burdened infrastructure.

I see it as necessary for the BoC to think outside the box and come up with ideas other than just offering tax abatements to attract the industrial businesses we need to generate the tax revenue needed for the improvements to our infrastructure as well as reduce our 8% unemployment rate while also reducing the number of our under-employed.

There are many counties in our state that also experienced rapid population growth over a short period of time and many more counties that are experiencing high unemployment rates as we are if not higher. We are all competing with one another for pretty much the same type of businesses, but those opportunities are limited. This makes it necessary for the county to make some investments to bring them here.

IMO I believe most of the "hatred" comes from the fact that the voters turned down the idea twice, but the admin went ahead with the project. To add insult to injury, Jerry was quoted many times the airport would not cost the taxpayers anything

I believe you are right! :thumbsup

There's more land, near me, connected to the movie studio venture. Of course, if George Clooney needs a place to spend the night, I'm all in. :D

I can see the airport as being beneficial, but the more I read about the MG company that is here, the less happy I am about it.
