Smells fishy to me...
This first comment I read is what I was thinking:

There's a reason that valuable documents are usually either (1) transported by a personal courier, NOT shipped by some shipping service, or (2) locked away for safekeeping, with photocopies being distributed in their place.

Sounds a lot like negligence to send valuable papers across country using a shipping service. WHY was it necessary to send the original documents from NY to LA instead of copies?
