Utiliy deposists

Are all deposits refundable? Out of curiosity I called the water department, and asked if my deposit would be refunded. Yes, it can be refunded if we move. I'm having a bit of a problem with this. I can understand holding said deposit for a short time, then refunding it after a set amount of the account being in good standing.

:dunno I have never given it a second thought. I would think they would keep it until you no longer used them and either refund it at that point or apply it to your last bill.

Well that makes sense. Except after 20 years or so, will anyone remember that there is a deposit?

The policy of the Paulding County Water Department is to keep your deposit for as long as you are a customer, and to return it to you without interest after your account is paid in full and you no longer have an active account with them. That would be illegal if they were a regulated utility.

I can't even tell you if we paid a deposit to the water dept. or to Greystone when we moved to Paulding...

I'm guessing they've been hosed enough times by people not paying last bill at an address that they established this as a way to avoid it. Don't be mad at them, be mad at the people that made it necessary. Just saying.

And yes, they will absolutely know that there is a deposit on the account 20+ years later.

How long ago?

Can't answer that with an absolute but I'm guessing it is very likely that you did.

It makes no difference, I just don't remember. And, it doesn't matter because we're not moving any time soon.

Holy crapadoodle ...

A $25 application fee is charged for setting up service. A meter deposit of $50 is required for water service. If sewer service is available, an additional deposit of $50 if required.

So that means that if you are on county water and sewer it will cost you $125 to set up new service.

And all that is well and good, but after a certain time they should return the "deposits." On top of all that they also charge you a reconnect fee + another deposit if you fall behind. IDK, even Greystone returns the deposits they have after 2 years of on time payments.

When you rent a house, do you get your security deposit back while you still rent or when you leave and the place is checked? That's how I view the deposit for water/meter. I find the additional one for sewer to be a bit odd, though.

I only had to pay a water deposit. everyone has to pay the water deposit now. In the contract you sign it states you will only get the deposit back once the account is closed and paid in full.

SOme have to pay a gas or power deposit but my credit was good enough that I didn't need to. MOving is expensive .... I have to do it again soon...ugh! BUt my driving will be cut down drastically so that is a plus

Paulding Water? Oh yes. You did. :)) Everybody does. Every time. Now, they will transfer the deposit if you move. That is unless you have a balance at your old address. But, then they just forward that to your new address.

True story. When I transferred my water from my old home to my current home, I went into the office and made the transfer. They were going to transfer the deposit. So all set. Five years later I get a cut off notice at my current home that stated if I did not pay the prior balance on my previous home they would cut off my current water. I had moved thinking all was taken care of. They stated their was an "accounting error" at that time and, bottom line, pay it or no water for me. I paid it. :dunno
