16 teenagers arrested for vandalism at East Paulding High

All kids doing this sordof thing always cry out..It was only a prank. They never think about what they are doing until they are in trouble.

I work with a girl who has twin girls that attend a cobb county school. Last week..one of the girls was in 1st period PE and when she came back to her change back into her clothes, she noticed her back pack missing. She had put her important stuff in the locker like her phone and cash because the back pack won't fit in the small pe lockers...but in her backpack was her car keys. She called her mom and told her that her back pack had been stolen and her keys were in it. Her mom asked about her phone and wallet, the girl told her the phone was in the locker but her wallet was in her car locked up. The mom told her she would bring her a spare key up there so she could atleast get into her car after school.

Well the mom went to the school and noticed that the daughters car wasn't in the parking lot. So she started checking credit/debit accounts etc. Seems whomever took the backpack realized the keys to her daughters car was in there and they decided to leave campus and go on a joy ride, to Ross to go shopping, to metro PCS to pay their phone bill, to kohls and a couple more places all the while, using my co workers daughters car and debit cards (both teens wallets was locked up in the car). So that afternoon the teens dad was driving home and happen to see his daughters car parked at a park, keys still in it just sitting there. He called to find out where his girls were (mom and dad are divorced so he didn't even know about the car being stolen)

Fast forward a few days and luckily Ross, Kohls and metro pcs all had cameras and they got the 3 seniors on the camera walking out with what they bought and the camera also shows them getting into the stolen car. One girl was known to be a trouble maker and into trouble alot the other two girls had never been in trouble. When they were arrested on felony car theft, credit card theft and several other charges, they were shocked that they were gonna be charged as adults. They screamed that they gave the car back, they didn't damage it, they put it back un harmed.. :laugh they seriously thought they wouldn't get into trouble for leaving it parked somewhere un harmed. Dumb dumb kids

Like Fox, I knew there would be consequences if I did something like that. My dad was a fairly influential guy around the county, but he also made it clear to me that if I did something stupid and got locked up, I would rot in jail.

I used to always tell my children if they got arrested, they would spend the night. In recent years, I've changed my mind. I've seen what's there. The last thing I want is to have them learn new ways to "misbehave". I have warned them that they might want to beg to stay. It won't be pretty when they get home. :tapfoot2

I feel pretty confident that if I had done something like that, jail would have been a nice place to be because my dad would have made sure that I was unable to walk across that stage to graduate (or to sit down for that matter)....

We had an employee steal gas from us on our gas card. His mom also worked for us. She couldn't understand why we fired him after SHE paid back the money.

Oh, and he was not a teenager........he was almost 30.

Same exact thing happened to us (minus the mom.)

He went to church with us. :(

Believe me we talked about this also. Son knows a couple of the kids and IF is right, more than just stated were involved. Senior pranks are fun and cute, (last year some seniors at South put up "For Sale" signs! :)) ) not damaging to the school, other property, and possibly your whole life!
I hope these parents do not think they are just going to get off and have it deemed an "innocent" prank. They need lawyers.
The board is also deciding what they are going to do as school punishment. This just possibly cost some of them their diplomas.

Now if they went to Home Depot and bought the signs then no problems. But I suspect they went around and stole a bunch of real estate signs. These signs cost money, $25 to $75 each, that the agents have to spend out of their own pockets. Not to mention the time it takes to replace them.

While it may have been cute and funny, other working people suffered financial losses, lost business and maybe more. This is THEFT and if they took enough signs, could be a felony and should be treated as such! :tapfoot2 There are no "cute" stunts when it effects the business livelyhoods of others.

Sorry ShoeDiva, didn't mean to pick on you. Just VERY tired of loosing money so a few kids can play a joke on someone.....THINKING what they were doing had no effects on other people.

I heard it was $40,000 worth of damage. If that is true part of the punishment should be to work it off or find a job and pay it off. Kids brains don't work the same as adults and they will take more risks and do more stupid things than adults sometimes. They do need to pay for those acts. Part of the lessons learned while growing up should be that there is a price to pay when you break the law or other rules of society. :(

One of the senior class pranks at my school was taking a small car apart and then reassembling it in the closed in courtyard ... the car belonged to someone that was in on it.

Its okay and THEY DID! ( :Ninja I might know one of the moms that foot the bill. It was wayyyy cheaper than $25 a sign!)

I could almost find room to go with the whole "it was just a senior prank" thing if it had only been on the parking lot surface. Easy enough to get them to clean up, etc. But they crossed the line into full on stupid when the sprayed the guard shack, the government vehicles, and then apparently went across the road and sprayed private property, too.

...According to a Sheriff's Office news release, all 19 are charged with felony criminal interference with government property...

They're in deep doo doo.
You are right. They. Need. Lawyers. Goodness, prom, and walking at graduation is the least of their worries. Felony means, loss of a lot their whole lives. :faint

I was surprised when I was called about a few of them. It was out of character from all that I know of them. I guess you never really know if yours will walk away or get caught up in the "mob mentality."

I'm sure those who have never been in trouble before will end up getting a plea bargain for a misdemeanor with probation.

Can they plea down on gov't property? (That gov't property is what I heard was the reason it had to be a felony instead of misdemeanor.)

With a good attorney, maybe.

They'll be able to plead this down to misdemeanors. The DA isn't going to want to spend the money to send 19 people to trials over this when he can get a conviction to a plea agreement; especially when this will be many of the offenders first offense.

Exactly - with an attorney, I can imagine the DA will want to make a plea deal with restitution and probation - especially if the school board will take a hard, swift stance on the students. As for the two 19 year olds, I think they might get a more severe sentence since they are no longer in school.
