Housing opinion question

This discussion has got me thinking more about my 'forever' home to build one day. Anyone have or know anyone with a barndominium? From the little bit of reading I've done online, they are cheaper to build and you can get some cool floorplans with huge garages (needed for my future car collection :D ).

This one looks really cool and has a garage/workshop big enough for 4 cars.

I knew a couple in Michigan who bought a church that was more than 100-years-old. It was brick and two stories. They turned the bell tower into an observation deck to look at stars with a telescope. They did an awesome job converting it into a home.

We looked at them while selecting our house plan but didn’t really find any “ranch” (one level) plans we liked. My dad’s former co-worker has had one in South Georgia for a while now. Double check the hidden costs, I’ve heard the actual price is much higher than the quoted price but can’t say whether or not that’s accurate.

I know someone who lives in one of these. The inside is finished with drywall and it looks good. He uses half of it for a shop. Drawbacks are it must be heavily insulated all around the living space including the ceiling, sweating can be an issue especially in humid climates and it is on a slab.

I wouldn't spend money on a used mobile home. I'd replace it with a new one or buy a small house. If you can live with the fact that a mobile home isn't going to appreciate over time, then it's a very viable option. However, today's mobile home isn't the same as mobile homes of the past. They cost a good bit more than they used to, but they're still cheaper purchase than a house.

My husband and I are looking to buy a mobile home. The ONLY reason we are, is that I refused to pay the inflated prices people are asking for houses these days.

So basically a 2 bedroom?

I would go ahead and make it 3 bedroom. If nothing else, for resale, but you never no what might come into your life. You might get a harem.

Also, I personally would not have a house without a basement. For me it's a necessity, but probably won't be for everyone.

Where will you live?

South Georgia.

Yep, 2 bedroom. If needed, I could build out part of the garage and make a 3rd bedroom and still have a 2 car garage. I'm not a big fan of basements and I don't think the land would work (very flat).

Not sure the laundry room is in a good place.

Just had an idea....I could swap the laundry room (make is smaller since it would open into the hall) and the 2nd bathroom. Only negative is you'd have to through the 2nd bedroom to get to the bathroom.

I would move it into the space where the small bathroom is so it would be accessible from the hall, and push the bathroom to the outside wall.
As in, where the sink and toilet is, then put those where the laundry room is now.
