I am just sick...

Surely he either had a pretty serious grow operation going or he was doing "business" from his home. Maybe both.

And re: his supposed PTSD ... his father is saying that he sought treatment. That means little without further details. What did he really do and if he did get diagnosed, did he continue to follow the prescribed treatment? And ... was the PTSD real or a ploy for any of a thousand reasons? So many questions and none of the answers fixes what he did.

The last case I heard of violence involving a vet with PTSD ended with his wife shot execution style in their home, in front of their children. He'd dressed in his fatigues just prior to executing his wife. He's now sitting in Polk County jail. I don't know if there were any drugs involved, as I haven't followed the case since he was arrested.

(A little off topic I know, but this thread reminded me of that.) :(

Last one I heard of was in Floyd County...guy whose mother I grew up with went wacko when his girlfriend broke up with him and murdered her father and went looking for her to kill. He's sitting in the Floyd County jail now.

UM - Agreed that nothing fixes what he did. Your points are valid. And whether PTSD was real or no, you can't go around murdering people. It may mitigate the sentence, but the guilt for the crime is still there.

This is my guess, based on the raid and ciop's chick remark that they wouldn't raid just for him smoking now and again.

In the past 3 decades I've seen society change in a dramatic way. We were just talking about this very subject today. The numbers of LEOs shot or even shot at in the line of duty was MUCH fewer and far between. I've said it a thousand times...Darwin had it wrong. We did not spring from animals, we are turning into them.

I don't ask for worship, pitty or thanks for selecting this career. Speaking for myself, I'd rather people allow us to do our job, maybe give a polite nod and allow me to go home at night. Or, as it was for many years, go home in the morning.

I consider myself blessed and fortunate that I'm nearing the end of my career. If I were a younger man, I doubt very seriously that I would get into it today...with the world and people the way they are. There are more who abuse drugs and alcohol, not to mention the Gangsta Rap mentality that is added to the mix.

I no longer have to go out and do all the dirty work, but I still go out and make arrests with my guys on a daily basis. They walk into dark houses to arrest murderers, former violent convicts and drug heads 24/7. They track them down and chase them down every day. In some cases it causes me more stress than doing it myself because I am held ultimately responsible for what they do.

I wish I could say I had good news for the future, but I don't. All I can say is God be with our children and grandchildred in a world that is the dominion of satan until Christ returns.

well said, my friend, well said.

The police officers have to assume based upon historical data that if there are large amounts of marijuana believed to be in a residence, there are also lots of cash, other drugs, AND GUNS. There have been many drug raids in this country for marijuana where the bad guys shot at the police officers. It's for their own safety they go with what many perceive as a "small army."

Personally, I believe the government should legalize and regulate marijuana. This would eliminate a lot of the crime normally associated with it. It would also financially hurt the drug cartels south of our borders.

"Legalize 2012 is putting a citizen's initiative on the ballot in Colorado in 2012 to amend the Constitution to re-legalize cannabis and hemp for all uses. The Legalize 2012 Project is a grassroots organization working with all cannabis activists in the state to write an initiative that has a broad base of support..."

Well said. I totally agree, and your first paragraph makes total sense. I'm not LE, so I have a hard time sometimes thinking of situations from LE's point of view.

I've been mulling this over. IF it's true that he's a vet with PTSD and is self-medicating by growing his own pot, IF it's true he wasn't selling it, and IF it's true he worked the night before at Wal-Mart and they woke him up and he didn't realize who they were, then this isn't as cut-and-dry as I had first thought. IF these things are true, this is more in line with what happened with the old lady in SW Atlanta than with outlaws killing cops. I know not everybody agrees, but six cops for a pot raid (which they said is normal)? He was obviously loaded for bear, but then again, he's asleep and finds intruders in his house. I feel badly for everybody if all this is the case. Another example of this stupid War on Drugs getting people killed. If it's for hard drugs, yes, go for it. But for pot? Really?
So much for that theory ...

...Matthew David Stewart, a 37-year-old Army veteran suspected of growing marijuana, told an acquaintance last summer that if police ever raided his Ogden house he would "go out in a blaze of glory and shoot to kill," a Weber County investigator wrote in an affidavit for his arrest...

...The day after the shooting, police say they retrieved "multiple" pot plants, special lighting and a water system from Stewart's house, which under Utah law is covered by a drug-free zone because of the neighboring church building.

The affidavit doesn't fix Stewart's position when he opened fire, but says police had cleared his basement and the main level before he started firing...

Say no more. Interesting they had already cleared the basement and the main floor. Crap. Thanks for following up with The REST of the Story. Fry his butt. Although, I think Utah still has the firing squad, and perhaps hanging, along with lethal injection. Or they still did some years ago.
