Men have a tendency to wander...

I think Pat lost his marbles years ago. He's made several statements that are waaaay out there.

Time for Pat to retire to a nice place with a padded prayer room.

The flesh always wants to cheat. As a follower of Christ, one must not submit to the flesh and resist those things. It's all about who we want to follow.

The video implicates that the wife wants to forgive him and continue in the marriage. If that is the case, she needs to forgive him...as often as she needs to do that. It's hard, but sometimes forgiveness is a moment by moment struggle and you have to forgive the offending person over and over, but you can get past it. If she can not forgive him, she needs to divorce and get out of that marriage. If she doesn't the infidelity will become the definition of that marriage, he will continue to cheat and she will become hurtfully bitter. (I say hurtfully bitter, because it will hurt her and define her very feelings about him, making it impossible for her to love him as a godly wife should).

Pat is a "has been" but he still gladly cashes the checks people blindly send him.

As far as the topic, I have to agree that "men" have the tendency to wander (and sometimes even wonder). What's interesting to me is this same storyline can be presented in a National Geographic or some similar broadcast and the majority of viewers would agree that the tendency is part of the man's genetic making or part of man's "evolution" to promote the survival of the species. But slide in a religious take and suddenly many are aghast with disbelieve of the implications.

Let's not leave the ladies out. One of my best friends at work is having to stay 5 years passed his normal retirement because his "wife", who never worked during their marriage, left him for some cowboy and will draw half of my friends retirement check when he finally is financially able to retire and support her sorry.....(fill in your word of choice).

Amen. I really am bothered by what that man spouts and so many that believe every word.

Lisa: I am not a fella but I do not think happy christian men have a tendency to cheat. (The ones I know, anyway.)
BS: I am also not one in the camp of the flesh always wants to cheat. I have never wanted to and I do not think of myself as a better person or christian, than anyone else, so I just have a hard time with that statement.

Oh, and feel free to listen to his discussion on what a kid can do to encourage his dad to pay attention to his mom - Robertson essentially blames it on the mom for not being attractive...

I love me some Pat Robertson - that man is flat out crazy and doesn't hold his crazy in anymore... :laugh

BS is right, humans have primal urges that temp us to be led by the flesh. Our intellects and moral standards is what will keep us from it.

And yes, women are as bad as men. Many studies would suggest that more women than men cheat nowadays. I suspect this is true.

I go with Diva - I don't think the "tendency" to cheat is that widespread...

Since this is in the religion forum, I'll elaborate. The Bible clearly tells us that the flesh is sinful by nature.

1 John 2:15-17 ESV / Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV / Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 8:7 ESV / For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot.

Romans 8:13 ESV / For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

2 Peter 1:5-8 ESV / For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Believers have a choice to walk in the Spirit with God or give in to the desires of the flesh. There are only two choices. Sometimes we struggle and go back and forth trying to satisfy our desires. It doesn't matter if you're male or female, the choices are the same for all of us. From the scriptures above, the Bible gives us a great description of the spirit and flesh and it doesn't matter if we are thinking about cheating (or sinning in general) the flesh always wants to do what it wants to do. It doesn't take breaks or a vacation from those attributes because it is always the same. We battle our flesh all the time and some are more successful at it than others and some fall to temptation more than others. As for the truth factor, whether we believe it or not is irrelevant. The truth stands alone regardless whether you and I want to accept it or not. Amen.

How did this story get back in the news. The original article was from January. I think we discussed it then. The conclusion of (most) rational folks is that Robertson would be better served by just keeping quiet. :))

I see what you are saying, but being led by the flesh doesn't exclusively mean sexual immorality (or the tendency to cheat).

I thought the story from January was the one where he told the man to go ahead and divorce his dying wife... :dunno

I never said it was exclusive. When walking in the flesh, we feed whatever desire is convenient at the time. It may be drunkeness, sexual immorality, slothfulness, pride, etc but the desires are always there ready to consume according to what we are feeding it. It's what the flesh is. We can't change it.

You said the flesh "always wants to cheat." I took that to mean that you were saying that the flesh "always" tempts a person to cheat - that's what I was disagreeing with. The flesh can tempt us to do many things, but it may not tempt us to do every single thing that Galatians warns us about.

I thought my post kind of addressed the woman's issue. Guess I was talking to myself. :dunno

Did you say something? No, seriously, I'm taking the stance that if the woman really wanted to forgive the man, she wouldn't have writen to Pat Robertson about it...

I think it's better put that the flesh is always tempted. This is absolutely true. EX: You think that sissy (LOL) Tatum is hot. That is your flesh working on you. But because of your moral standards (likely a combination of your faith, your love and commitment for your husband, etc), you resist these temptations and don't act upon them. And you would be no different than anyone else, except that many give in to the tempations of the flesh.

Does this make more sense?
