No winter break for Paulding

I'm not even sure when the break is/was. But if they waited until the 25th to vote, how many more people would make travel/dr plans etc? I have no idea, just a thought.

If the days don't have to be made up they could still reverse this decision right?

The last time they took votes they ultimately ignored them. In addition, the time that would have been lost for people who had plans could prove quite valuable. People now have more than 30 days to make other arrangements rather than 2 weeks. Most things are refundable 30 days out.

I'm sure they did look at other options to include extending the school year out another week.
Extending the school year by a week or adding Saturdays is pointless and stupid and they all know that. The big problem that they have is that this issue was on the agenda for the 25th and by rushing it through tonight they will be stuck with having people go on about them not giving the community the opportunity to speak their mind on the issue. It is exactly this sort of thing that, fair or not, leaves the citizens feelings distrust towards there elected officials. The students and teachers need the time before CRCT. What benefits the kids most, time in class in February or time in class the week before the test? If they want to be truly honest about doing what is best for the kids they'd have them in class during part of Spring break week. ;)

Good question and I have no idea.

The way I see it, they had three viable options to look at and determine which would have the least negative affect on the people of the county.

1. Eliminate Winter Break (Feb) to use as make up days

2. Eliminate Spring Break (April) to use as make up days

3. Extend the school year an additional week

Extending the school year an additional complaints would have effected the senior class and their families. It would also have effected those who plan to take a family vacation the first week after school is out.

I would wager a lot more families take vacations during Spring Break than those who do during Winter Break. I know many in the area who take their families to Florida during Spring Break because it's much warmer compared to February.

I see eliminating Winter Break as less damaging overall.

I agree Fox. And as I stated elsewhere, I doubt there are that many families in Paulding that can truly afford a Feb and an April vacation. Quite frankly, these days we do well to work in a Summer vacation. LOL We had considered a long weekend in Feb, but that's as far it had gotten.

Honestly, (for my son) I'd rather he be there. As much as I dislike the CRCT, it's a critical year for him. I've already been told that due to budget constraints after school tutoring is not an option. My son needs that instruction time and adding 15 minutes a day would not benefit him. I'm sure they are other kids who are struggling who need that time as well. It might make a difference, it might not.

I fully agree with you about how important that week is in preparation for CRCT.

I just received word that the vote to remove the Winter break for make up days is not a done deal. The vote was to put it on the agenda for the meeting on the 25th.

If you guys have been reading the other site then you know I have issues with paying the teachers who take vacation while they bring in subs and pay them too. I have real problems with that during this budget crunch. I have not seen any reference to that in this thread. Are you guys ok with that?

It's a done deal.

“When we look at what’s best for children and cutting instructional days, if we were to request a waiver [from the state] and were to be granted that waiver, then we’d be looking at 170 instructional days for students — that’s down from 180 instructional days for kids, and I don’t feel like that is what is best for the students of Paulding County,” Cole told board members. “[My leadership team and I] discussed adding minutes onto the day, but with the amount of time that we missed, again, I don’t know if that’s the best scenario.”

That is all? Nope! ???

Cole said another aspect of a waiver would be that teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers and lunchroom staff would lose those six days of pay.

I take it if the state were to approve the waiver, these faculty members and staff would lose six days of pay.

Sorry, but I was looking some stuff up to formulate a more comprehensive answer for you. "Nope" was just something to hold you over until then. LOL

I don't see anything official yet that would allow teachers to take a week off during the school year for a vacation.

It was in Kim's post on the other site.

I'll check it out tomorrow. It's going on 2am and I'm tired as heck. I haven't been up this late in ages. Goodnight everyone and pleasant dreams.
