Squaring off fabric

I am still sooo confused.... what exactly does this mean? And why does it need to be squared? Help a new girl out, y'all! LOL

Cut on a straight line, basically. And straight meaning true to the weave of the fabric and pattern. A pattern in the fabric would be the most obvious reason to make sure it's squared, but cutting it in a non-straight manner could affect the stretch/hang of the fabric as well. If it's cut on a 45-degree angle, that's called bias, and will cause the fabric to stretch. Which some patterns call for.

Oooohhhhhhhh! I gotcha! I knew what bias was, but this is the first I've heard of squared. Thank you os much!
