Mass Resignation from the Mormon Church

Apparently there is going to be a mass resignation from the Mormon Church on the 14th. Of course, it hasn't happened yet, so we'll see what happens.

I was surprised how difficult it is to get out of the Mormon Church.

The Mormons went beyond just condemning same sex marriage. They are declaring children of same sex unions cannot be baptized or blessed and cannot live with their parents and must hold certain opinions on homosexuality. People who are in same sex relationships are considered apostates.

Of course, this is the same church that seemed to think darker skin color meant you couldn't become a priest, (until 1978 when they finally admitted how backward that kind of thinking is).

It will be interesting to see what kind of effect this has (if any) on Mormonism.

There are a lot of good people that are Mormons.
A lot of very good people.

That said.
Trouble with most religions, they have people in them.

There are a lot of good people in every religion. Sadly there are also some bat crazy lunatics within them too.

Mormon's can believe what they want and if those beliefs cause a mass exodus maybe they will reevaluate those beliefs. :dunno

Maybe most will convert to Scientology. :sermon

Historically, they have opposed homosexuality. Founder L. Ron Hubbard called it a "perversion" in his book Dianetics. They did believe in conversion therapy.

More recently, they have shown signs of softening on it, but as recently as 2008, they opposed California's Proposition 8.

Maybe they will give up on religion altogether?

Very possibly. It's like a sermon on tithing, nobody enjoys it and many turn away because of it. Silly as that may sound.

I can't think most Mormons will be going anywhere. I keep holding out hope, however, that SOMETHING will break the hold Scientology has on people, and they will see it for the Jim-Jones-on-steroids type cult it is. Leah Remini's recent book is helping in that regard, and she should know - she was in it from when she was a little kid because her mother joined them up. That's gotta be like 40 years or something before she got out.

Of course, there are the incessant rumors about Tom Cruise and John Travolta being gay...

And to think....this societal climate was just ripe for them to bring back polygamy. At least for the fundamentalists anyway. Hope springs eternal.

Yes, because every man is too much man for just one woman. :snicker: Let us know how that works out for you.

Most groups make exceptions for the wealthy.

I can't help it, it's a gift.

Quick Update:

Apparently this went well. There were at least 1500 resignations. It is not known how many became atheists and how many moved to other faiths.

Homosexuality isn't just about sex. It's also about love.

Wow, that many in person and 2,000 more from those that could not attend is a very big statement. Too bad it seems they are not listening. :dunno
I do hope that they can find another path to continue their spirituality, whatever that might be.

I don't think anyone doubts that homosexuals can love each other. But that doesn't make it OK.

I would guess that there are pedophiles who love their child partners, and the children love them back. It's still wrong.

I could come up with other parallels, but I think that one makes my point.

I do not agree with the Mormon church's condemnation of children from same-sex couples. In fact I think that to be contrary to the teachings of Jesus. But I do support them on their belief that homosexuality is wrong.

Even at 3,500 that's only a drop in the bucket to their estimated 15M membership. I'm not a Mormon (or a moron) so I can't legitimately speak on their faith, but obviously they don't condone homosexuality, not unlike many religious faiths.
